SK Engineering & Construction Co., an affiliate of energy and telecom conglomerate SK Group, said Wednesday that, along with a Chinese construction firm, it has won a US$420 million deal to build a railway in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

A joint venture between SK Engineering and China State Construction Engineering Corp. was awarded a contract to build a 139 kilometer long railway, part of Etihad Rail's 605-kilometer Stage 2 project, which will connect Ruwais with Ghuweifat on the UAE border with Saudi Arabia.

The joint venture will be responsible for all design and construction, civil and track works of the rail network line.

SK Engineering owns a 42.5-percent stake in the project, the company said, adding that the project will be completed within 46 months.

It is the first time that a South Korean construction firm has played a key role in a railway-construction project in the Middle East. (Yonhap)
