Samsung Electronics Co.'s Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong headed to China this week, apparently to inspect the construction site of the tech giant's new chip production facility, industry sources said on Feb. 6, 2019.

The de facto head of the world's No. 1 semiconductor and smartphone producer left for China on Monday to check Samsung Electronics' business in the country, a source said.

Monday was the first day of the Lunar New Year's holiday, which ran from Feb. 4-6 this year.

The business tycoon is known to have visited the company's factory in Xian in central China.

Samsung launched a US$7 billion-project to build a second production line at the Xian factory in March last year amid growing demand for its 3D V-NAND products.

"Detailed itineraries for this business trip to China have not been confirmed," the source said. "As far as I know, (Lee's) return date has not been set either." (Yonhap)
