South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. said on Dec. 13, 2018 it has joined forces with German partner Deutsche Telekom to carry out joint projects in the field of mobile edge computing.

SK Telecom said it has reached an agreement with MobiledgeX, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom.

Mobile edge computing is a concept in which services are provided to users at the "edge" of the network by installing data centers near clients.

SK Telecom said the concept, which involves installing small 5G data centers, is significant as it can reduce delay and offer faster speeds to users.

Mobile edge computing can lend support to emerging industries, including self-driving automobiles, robots, drones, high-performance cloud services and virtual reality services, SK Telecom said.

The two companies will partner in studying core technologies related to mobile edge computing, as well as in expanding the ecosystem of the field and finding new business opportunities, SK Telecom said. (Yonhap)
