In celebration of 600th anniversary of coronation of King Sejong

Celebrating outstanding achievements of some historical and current figures in Korea, including King Sejong and the top singer Cho Yong-pil, Korea Minting, Security Printing and ID Card Operating Corporation (KOMSCO) recently issued their commemoration gold and silver medals.

In early October, the KOMSCO launched three different kinds of medals commemorating 600th anniversary of enthronement of King Sejong who invented the Hangeul, the Korean alphabet – two gold medals and one silver medal. As the second in series of royal seals, these medals feature the royal seal of King Sejong designed by an intangible cultural asset. New commemoration medals come in three types in limited number of 1,800 medals, including gold medals (37.3 grams), gold-plated medals (31.1 grams) and silver medals (31.1 grams). Their prices (including VAT) are KRW2.75 million for a gold medal, KRW385,000 for a gold-plated medal and KRW297,000 for a silver medal.

At the same time, the KOMSCO issued two kinds of medals commemorating the ‘Wolincheongang Jigok’(a compilation of Korean songs written by King Sejong) – a gold medal with design of gold type (93.3 grams) and a gold-plated silver medal with design of silver type (93.3 grams) – in limited number of 600 medals. Their prices (including VAT) are KRW2.64 million for gold medal and KRW660,000 for silver medal. All of these commemoration medals were on subscription sale in the middle of October 2018 at online shopping malls of KOMSCO(www.koreamint.com), Hyundai Department Store(www.hmall.com/www.thehyundai.com), and Poongsan Hwadong Company(www.hwadong.com) as well as branches of IBK, Nonghyup and post offices.

Then on October 23, 2018, KOMSCO unveiled three types of medals commemorating 50th anniversary of debut by the top singer Jo Yong-pil, including premium medal I(gold, 31.3 grams in weight, 99.9% of purity and 40mm in diameter), premium medal II (gold, 15.55 grams in weight, 99.9% of purity and 28mm in diameter), and collection medal (silver, 15.55 grams in weight, 99.9% of purity and 40mm in diameter), in limited number of 5,050 medals. Since he debuted in 1968 as a member of ‘Atkins Group’, Jo Yong-pil presented excitement and pleasure to all generations with numerous hit songs, and published 19 regular albums to be admired as the king of singer.

These commemoration medals depicted a scene of Jo Yong-pil’s performance along with his signatures, such as a guitar, microphone and sun glasses on the front side and a 50th anniversary emblem on the rear side. Prices of these medals (including VAT) are KRW2.75 million for premium medal I, KRW1.43 million for premium medal II, and KRW165,000 for collection medal. These medals were on subscription sale for two weeks from October 23 to November 4, 2018 at the online shopping mall of KOMSCO(www.koreamint.com), and Poongsan Hwadong Company(www.hwadong.com) as well as branches of IBK, Nonghyup and Golden Dew Lotte Department Stores.

In addition, KOMSCO also issued commemoration medals for EXO, a global top idol group, in April this year to celebrate typical K-Pop stars who contributed to spread of Korean Wave culture across the world. The medal depicted faces of 9 members of EXO group and its logo. The most popular group, EXO, sold more than one million albums since it debuted in 2012, recording the Korea first ‘quadruple million seller’. And the group won more than 20 grand prizes in music for the fifth consecutive year.
