South and North Korea are expected to open their liaison office at the North's Kaesong Industrial Complex next week, a government official said Friday.

Baik Tae-hyun, spokesman of the Ministry of Unification, said that discussions are under way to fix the opening date for the inter-Korean liaison office around the later part of next week.

"South and North Korea are now holding discussions on the opening date of the liaison office and other details. Late next week will likely be settled," said Baik in a media briefing.

In this regard, Sept. 14 is most plausible, according to government officials.

Presidential security adviser Chung Eui-yong said Thursday after his Pyongyang visit that the two Koreas agreed to open the liaison office before President Moon Jae-in's North Korea visit slated for Sept. 18-20.

Baik said South and North Korea have completed consultations on an agreement on the composition and operation of the Kaesong liaison office and only the signature process remains.

The agreement is expected to be signed during the opening ceremony of the liaison office. (Yonhap)
