Trump: S. Korea Dumping Washing Machines in US
President Donald Trump has accused South Korea of dumping washing machines in the U.S.
In an interview with Reuters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said it's destroying American industry which once created good jobs.
Trump is set to make a decision by February second on whether to impose tariffs on imported South Korean washing machines as recommended by the U.S. International Trade Commission(ITC).
Lee Myung-bak Criticizes Prosecution's Probe into His Ex-aides
Former President Lee Myung-bak has criticized the prosecution’s ongoing investigation into allegations that his close aides received bribes from the National Intelligence Service when he was in power.
In a statement he read at his office in southern Seoul Wednesday, Lee said the prosecution’s ultimate target is him, and urged they take aim at him rather than his former aides, whom he described as devoted public officials.
Hyundai Motor to Invest 23 Trln Won in New Industries
Hyundai Motor says it will invest 23 trillion won in new business areas and hire 45-thousand people over the next five years.

S. Korea, U.S. affirm no daylight between sides
South Korea and the United States said Thursday that there will be no letup in the rotational deployment of high-profile U.S. defense assets to and around the Korean Peninsula.
The two sides affirmed the position at their vice ministerial two-plus-two Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group (EDSCG) talks in Washington, D.C., according to the Ministry of National Defense.

A business lobby of peer to peer (P2P) finance firms said Thursday it has asked financial regulators to raise the annual ceiling on individual investment in P2P lenders.
P2P lending refers to a new type of loan extension to individuals or businesses through social network services or the Internet and covers a wide range of services, including loans to startups and self-employed businessmen.

The two Koreas have agreed to jointly march under the “Korean Unification” flag at the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Olympics next month, Seoul’s Unification Ministry said Wednesday, after the two Koreas sat down to discuss the North’s participation in the games.

Two Koreas to march together at Olympics opening ceremony; field united ice hockey team
South and North Koreas agreed that their athletes will make a joint entrance at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics under a white "unification flag" showing the Korean Peninsula in blue, a joint press statement released by Seoul's unification ministry said on Wednesday.
The two Koreas also agreed to field a united women's ice hockey team, the statement said.
Parties blast Hong over Islam-insulting term

Olympic Athletes to Train in N.Korean Ski Resort
North and South Korea will hold a celebration in the North's scenic Mt. Kumgang resort on the eve of the 2018 Winter Olympics, and have skiers from both sides will train in the Masikryong Ski Resort on North Korea's east coast.
South Korean officials made the proposal during talks in the border truce village of Panmunjom on Wednesday and North Korea agreed.

North Korean Samjiyon Band to perform during Pyeongchang Olympics
North Korea has agreed to send the Samjiyon Band, an orchestra with more than 140 members, to South Korea to perform in Seoul and in Gangneung, a city in Gangwon Province, during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. South and North Korea reached this agreement during a working-level meeting at the Tongilgak (Unification Pavilion) on the North Korean side of Panmunjeom on Jan. 15 that was held to arrange a visit to South Korea by a group of North Korean artists. Vice minister-level chief negotiators from the two sides will be attending working-level talks scheduled for Jan. 17.

North to send 230 cheerleaders to South
North Korea proposed to send nearly 230 members of a cheerleading squad to the South next month for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, as part of a larger delegation that will include high-level government officials, athletes, taekwondo demonstrators, spectators, reporters and orchestra artistes.
Lee Myung-bak cries foul over corruption investigations
Former President Lee Myung-bak said Wednesday that investigations into alleged corruption in his administration are political payback to hold him accountable for the suicide of his predecessor, Roh Moo-hyun.
Lee held a press conference at his office in southern Seoul Wednesday evening and read a statement addressing prosecutorial probes into his associates. Speculation is growing that Lee will soon be investigated for corruption.

Senior NIS Official Requested Private Meeting with MB and Reported, “Special Activity Expenses Could Cause a Disaster”
On January 16, it was confirmed that former President Lee Myung-bak (77) was aware of the fact that the special activity expenses of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) were delivered to Kim Baek-jun (78), the former official overseeing general affairs at Cheong Wa Dae and also one of the former president’s closest aides often referred to as the “butler.” This has some people arguing that a prosecutors’ investigation of the former president will be inevitable. In particular, the NIS agent who delivered the money at the time is a close acquaintance of former President Lee, and he personally reported to the president that the whole thing could become a problem (legally).
Opposing the Korean Peninsula Flag Is an Irresponsible Attempt to Incite the Public Using Cold War Tactics
On January 15, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Do Jong-hwan told the National Assembly that the government was working to have North and South Korean athletes enter together holding the Korean Peninsula flag at the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, triggering opposition from the conservative groups. The Liberty Korea Party and the Bareun Party argue that we should use the Taegeukgi since South Korea is hosting the international sporting event. Bareun Party leader Yoo Seong-min said, “A minister of the Republic of Korea is fueling conflict within South Korea,” and demanded that Do withdraw his comment. However, such an argument is nothing but stubbornness, ignoring the peace-seeking value of the Olympics and the history of the Korean Peninsula flag.
NK to Send over 140 Members of the Samjiyon Orchestra to Perform in Gangneung and Seoul
North Korea decided to send the Samjiyon Orchestra, with over 140 members, to the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. Reportedly, the Samjiyon Orchestra is a comprehensive artist troupe comprised of singers, dancers and more than eighty orchestra members. The orchestra will perform once in Gangneung and once in Seoul.

Two Koreas hold talks on N. Korean Olympic delegation
The two Koreas held talks Wednesday on the dispatch of North Korean athletes to next month's Winter Olympics as the American coach of South Korean female hockey players expressed concern over a unified Korean team.
The meeting in the truce village of Panmunjom was the second of its kind since North Korea agreed to send athletes, high-ranking officials, cheerleaders, performing artists, taekwondo demonstration teams and journalists for the Winter Games in South Korea's eastern ski resort of Pyeongchang.
Conservative ex-president Lee Myung-bak slams 'political retaliation'
South Korea's conservative ex-president Lee Myung-bak on Wednesday slammed a widening investigation by state prosecutors into alleged wrongdoing under his tenure as political retaliation targeting him.
In a brief televised speech, Lee denied any wrongdoing and accused prosecutors of "harassing" public officials who served for his administration. "The ultimate responsibility of all that happened during my tenure is in me."
Hyundai vows to invest $21 billion in next-gen car technology
SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Aju News) -- Hyundai Motor earmarked a five-year investment of 23 trillion won (21.6 billion US dollars) in next-generation technologies such as AI, autonomous driving and hydrogen fuel-cell cars to raise its competitiveness in the fast-changing global market.
