President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday conferred state orders on two retired justices of the Constitutional Court for their contribution to ensuring the basic rights enshrined in law, his office said.

Moon presented the first-class Order of Civil Merit of Mugunghwa to former Constitutional Court President Park Han-chul, whose six-year term ended Jan. 31. Former justice Lee Jung-mi, who retired March 13, received the first-class Order of Service Merit, Blue Stripes.

Both were involved in the court's high-profile deliberations over former President Park Geun-hye's impeachment case. After Park retired in January, Lee, then acting court chief, announced the ruling to dismiss the corruption-tainted president on March 10.

Court justices usually receive national medals upon retirement, but Park and Lee were unable to do so, as the former president was impeached by parliament over a massive corruption scandal last December and ousted in March. (Yonhap)
