'China Won't Approve 'Use of Force to Overthrow N. Korean Regime'

China has presented its “Maginot Line” on the North Korean nuclear issue in relation to increasing pressure from the United States for Beijing’s active role. The Global Times, a sister paper of the Chinese Communist Party’s official newspaper the People’s Daily, said in an editorial on Saturday that China can never approve the use of force to overthrow the North Korean regime or economic sanctions that may cause a humanitarian disaster. The paper said that Pyongyang is not listening to Beijing and that Seoul and Washington are not accepting Beijing’s proposal that North Korea freeze nuclear and missile programs in exchange for a halt to joint military drills by the United States and South Korea.

N. Korea Issues Threat over US Aircraft Carrier

North Korea has issued a fresh threat over the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier, which is expected to arrive in the waters near the Korean Peninsula around Tuesday. The Rodong Sinmun, the mouthpiece of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party, said in a commentary on Sunday that the North Korean military is ready to strike and destroy the United States nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

The paper said that the North Korean military is equipped with the up-to-date means of attack and defense including a hydrogen bomb.

S. Koreans' Trust in Japan Lowest among 6 Countries at 13%

A Japanese survey finds that South Koreans’ trust in Japan is significantly low at 13 percent. According to a Japanese Newspapers Association survey conducted in February, 13-point-eight percent of South Korean respondents said that they can trust Japan, the lowest among six countries, which includes the United States, Britain, France, China and Thailand. Chinese people’s trust in Japan was also low at 16-point-nine percent.

'U.S. Citizen Detained in N. Korea'

A Korean American who recently visited Pyongyang has reportedly been detained in North Korea. According to a source on North Korean affairs on Sunday, the American citizen, identified only by his surname Kim, was arrested by North Korean authorities on Friday afternoon at Pyongyang International Airport on his way out of the country. The reason for the arrest has yet to be revealed. Kim, in his 50s and a former professor at Yanbian University of Science and Technology, is known to have supported aid and relief programs to North Korea.

Presidential debate turns nasty as candidates focus on political assaults

South Korea's presidential campaign turned nasty Sunday as candidates focused on attacking rivals during their third TV debate over alleged wrongdoings, from kowtowing to North Korea to assisting in an attempted rape and fanning malicious rumors. The five candidates met in a joint debate hosted by the National Election Commission to discuss issues related to foreign policy, national security and political reforms. But they spent much of the two-hour discussion at the KBS broadcasting station on political and ideological offensives and the disclosure of past scandals involving opponents.

Trump defends decision to not label China currency manipulator to solve N.K. problem

U.S. President Donald Trump cited his decision to not label China a currency manipulator as an example of "flexibility," saying he made the decision against his campaign pledge because Beijing is helping solve the problem of North Korea. "For me to call him a currency manipulator and then say, 'By the way, I'd like you to solve the North Korean problem' doesn't work. So you have to have a certain flexibility," Trump said in an interview with the Associated Press, according to a transcript released by the AP on Sunday. Moreover, Trump said China has not manipulated its currency since he took office.

S. Korea stuns Kazakhstan for 2nd straight win at men's hockey worlds

South Korea stunned Kazakhstan for its second straight victory at the men's hockey world championships in Ukraine. South Korea, ranked 23rd, rallied with four third-period goals to take down No. 16 Kazakhstan 5-2 on Sunday (local time) at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship Division I Group A at the Palace of Sports in Kiev. It was South Korea's first win over the Central Asian nation in 13 meetings.

Rubio says U.S. should do whatever it takes to stop N.K. from acquiring ICBM capabilities

The United States should do whatever it takes to stop North Korea from acquiring capabilities to strike the continental U.S. with a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile, Senator Marco Rubio said Sunday. The former Republican presidential candidate made the case in an interview with CBS' "Face the Nation" after the moderator said that tensions with the North have led to many people raising questions if the U.S. is going to go to war with the communist nation. "Obviously, we have to ask ourselves a very fundamental question. And that is, it is acceptable, can we live in a world where Kim Jong-un possesses not just nuclear weapons, but the ability to deliver those weapons against the continental United States? Can we live in a world like that?" he said.

South Korean chipmaker SK hynix said Sunday that it has developed the next-generation graphics dynamic random-access memory, the fastest form of graphics memory in the world. The company plans to mass-produce the chip early next year. Graphic DRAM is designed to handle the enormous demands of graphics processing for graphics-intensive applications such as games and videos played on PCs, work stations and high-functioning game devices.

Chungcheong, the undecided political middle ground

Daejeon, the nation’s fifth-largest city by population, is often clustered with the neighboring Sejong Administrative City and the surrounding Chungcheong provinces as the “middle ground” in national elections. US citizen detained in N. Korea

A U.S. citizen has been detained in North Korea, CNN reported Sunday citing Martina Aberg, deputy head of mission for the Swedish Embassy in North Korea. "We have been informed and can confirm that there has been a detention of a U.S. citizen Saturday morning local," she said. "He was prevented from getting on the flight out of Pyongyang. We don't comment further than this."

Sweden represents the United States' interests in North Korea. According to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency, a former Korean-American professor was arrested on Friday at Pyongyang International Airport on his way out of the isolated country.

Carl Vinson to arrive in East Sea 'in days'

The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and its strike group will arrive in the East Sea "within days" to warn nuclear-armed North Korea against further acts of provocation, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said Saturday. Visiting Australia, Pence said at a joint press conference with the country's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull that the carrier and strike group were expected east of the Korean Peninsula within this month, Australian media reported.

Trump's N. Korean strategy may lead to 'dead end'

Donald Trump's provocative strategy on North Korea could lead to a military conflict making South Korea the biggest victim, warned Kelsey Davenport, director for nonproliferation policy at the Arms Control Association. She said diplomacy through negotiations is the only way to stop North Korea's nuclear brinkmanship, calling for the Trump administration to give more weight to engagement.

Her warning came as Trump has chosen a policy that will maximize pressure on the reclusive country through tougher sanctions and military signaling, while keeping a door open for engagement.

"If Trump is serious about talking with North Korea and reaching an agreement, this plan could lead to progress on halting and eventually rolling back North Korea's nuclear and missile programs," she said.

White House explained President Trump’s comment "Korea used to be part of China" that he was told by Chinese President Xi Jinping during the U.S.-China summit on April 6 and 7 by saying, “We know well that Korea has been independent for thousands of years.” Mike Anton, deputy assistant to President Trump for strategic communications, said on last Friday, “We generally do not comment on the details of what is said between the President and other leaders,” in response to the Korean media’s request to make a comment on Trump’s saying.

Most Women Want a Small Wedding But Few Succeed

Two-thirds of married women wanted to have only a small wedding, but only half of them managed to overcome social pressure to go the traditional route, according to a report on Monday. The Korea Institute of Child Care and Education polled 1,173 married women nationwide and found that 67 percent of respondents wanted to have a small wedding. But 49.1 percent, said their weddings were rather grand affairs in the end.

Park Aide to Be Sentenced Together with Ex-President

Ex-presidential aide Jeong Ho-seong will be sentenced on the same day as ex-President Park Geun-hye on charges of handing over confidential government documents to Park's crony Choi Soon-sil at her orders. The Seoul Central District Court said Thursday it "would not be appropriate" to sentence either Jeong or Park first since they are essentially both charged over the same offense. Jeong is already on trial, and Park's trial starts next month.

Acting President Warns of Imminent N.Korean Provocation

Acting president Hwang Kyo-ahn on Thursday asked the military to reinforce its defenses and warned that North Korea is poised to carry out a provocation around April 25. There are increasing signs that the North is getting ready to conduct a fresh nuclear test, and a U.S. Navy strike group headed by the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson is expected to return to waters off the Korean Peninsula around the same time. "Rumors about an impending crisis on the peninsula have now subsided significantly, but military tensions are still high," a government source here said.

Thyroid Cancer Operations Drop 40%

The number of surgical operations on patients with thyroid cancer fell by more than 40 percent over the past five years, the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service said on Thursday. From 2012 to 2016, operations dropped by 42.3 percent from 41,306 to 23,832 cases. Diagnoses soared to a peak of 41,200 cases in 2011, but a group of campaigning doctors in 2014 warned of massive overdiagnosis by ultrasound of small or harmless nodes that then led to unnecessary operations. As a result operations plunged to 22,321 cases in 2015.

Without loyal base, Ahn Cheol-soo’s support waning

The support gap between Minjoo Party presidential candidate Moon Jae-in and People’s Party candidate Ahn Cheol-soo has widened to double digits, according to a poll by Gallup Korea.

Results from the poll of support for presidential candidates, which was conducted over a three-day period from Apr. 18 with 1,004 voters nationwide, showed Moon was 41% to Ahn’s 30%, indicating a rise of one percentage point for Moon and a dip of 7 percentage points for Ahn compared to findings from a Gallup poll the week before.

On behalf of gay soldiers, students at Sogang University say “arrest me, too”

“Arrest me, too. I’m a gay conscripted policeman who likes dating and having sex with men” – the message appeared on a poster on the campus of Sogang University in Seoul on Apr. 19. Four posters that were displayed on Apr. 19 protested the arrest on Apr. 17 of a captain in the army identified by the initial “K” on charges of “disgraceful conduct” in violation of Article 92, Clause 6, of the Military Criminal Act. The posters, whose writers identified themselves as homosexuals, all began with the phrase, “Arrest me, too.”

“Unification plant nursery” in South Korea to prepare for regreening North Korean forests

A “unification plant nursery” producing saplings for use in restoring damaged North Korean forests is opening next year in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province. Cheorwon County mayor Lee Hyeon-jong and Green Korea Organization standing committee chair and former Prime Minister Goh Kun signed a working agreement on the plant nursery project at the Cheorwon County Office on Apr. 20. At the ceremony, the county and organization agreed to actively cooperate in four areas ahead of reunification of South and North Korea: building and operating the plant nursery; collaborating on necessary administration and technology for seed management; offering technical guidance on reforestation (including sapling cultivation and management), technical support, and anti-erosion efforts to restore damaged forests; and supplies of superior saplings and support for distribution of farm income sources to boost resident participation.

SK Telecom to introduce five-band carrier aggregation for Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone

SK Telecom announced plans on Apr. 20 to introduce LTE five-band carrier aggregation (CA) fourth-generation telecommunications technology for the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone starting in mid-May. The technology increases data transmission speed and performance by binding five LTE frequencies into a single frequency. “The data transmission rate for five-band CA is 700Mbps, which means it would take just 23 seconds to download a single [2GB] HD film,” SK Telecom said. “That’s nine times faster than early LTE and 40% faster than the current LTE ultra-high speed (500Mbps),” it explained.

China could accept surgical strike by U.S.

China’s state-run newspaper said Saturday that China would not engage militarily if the U.S. makes a surgical strike on North Korea’s nuclear facility, noting it would only resort to diplomatic channels to oppose such a move. Beijing’s position was stated in an editorial in the state-run Global Times, a tabloid controlled by China’s Communist Party. “If Pyongyang’s unwavering pursuit of its nuclear program continues and Washington launches a military attack on North Korea’s nuclear facilities as a result, Beijing should oppose the move by diplomatic channels, rather than get involved through military action.”

Study traces drop in GDP as population of Korea ages

A study released Sunday showed that a 0.1 percentage point drop in the working age population due to Korea’s low birth rate and aging society will lead to an average lowering of the country’s GDP by 0.3 percent. The Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade studied the relationship between the aging society, GDP and productivity and found that the 0.1 percentage point drop in the working age population, or people age 15 to 64, lowers investments made in the country by 0.96 percent.

Moon Jae-in of the Minjoo Party of Korea, Hong Jun-pyo of the Liberty Korea Party, Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party, Yoo Seong-min of the Bareun Party, and Sim Sang-jeung of the Justice Party argued on the issue of security in the second TV debate organized by KBS on the evening of April 19. When asked about the diplomatic leverage to block the U.S. from launching a preemptive strike on North Korea, Moon said, "I think it would be better to clearly state our willingness to join the U.S. and China in implementing strong sanctions against North Korea." Hong said, "China's role is most important."

Moon Jae-in Leads Polls against Ahn Cheol-soon in Any Hypothetical Situation

In a recent survey, Minjoo Party presidential candidate Moon Jae-in led People's Party contender Ahn Cheol-soo by more than the margin of error. According to a poll conducted by Research & Research commissioned by the Korean Economic Daily and MBC-TV for two days between April 21 and 22 on 1,514 adult men and women, the support for Moon was 39.1 percent while that for Ahn remained at 30.1 percent.

"China May Acquiesce in Surgical Strikes on North Korean Nuclear Sites"

A state-run newspaper said, for the first time, that the Chinese government may acquiesce in a surgical strike on North Korea's nuclear facilities by the U.S. Air Forces. This shows that the attitude of the Chinese leaders toward the North Korean regime is gradually hardening. The Global Times, the sister publication of the People's Daily newspaper, said on April 22 in an editorial "Realistic Solution Needed for NK Nuke Issue," "If Washington launches a military attack on North Korea's nuclear sites, Beijing should oppose the move by diplomatic channels but may eventually need military intervention."

Cosmetic Brand "Missha" Acquired by IMM Consortium at 188 Bil. Won

Able C&C, the operating company of cosmetic brand "Missha" and others, has been sold to a group of private equity firms including IMM Private Equity and IMM Investment. According to investment banking industry sources on April 21, Suh Young-pil, founder and largest shareholder of Able C&C, signed a stock purchase agreement on the same day to sell off a 25.5-percent stake in the company to the IMM consortium.

Lotte to Establish a Holding Company in Korea

Lotte will establish a holding company separate from one in Japan by spinning off the four group companies including Lotte Shopping, Lotte Confectionery, Lotte Chilsung, and Lotte Food into investment and operating units and merging the investment company. With this move, the group will be able to put an end to the controversy whether Lotte is a Japanese company. According to industry sources on April 21, the four Lotte Group companies will hold a board of directors meeting on the 26th and pass the agenda of splitting the companies.

Trade watchdog proposes preliminary anti-dumping tariffs on imported alloys

On complaints from domestic competitors, South Korea's state trade watchdog decided Friday to impose preliminary anti-dumping tariffs on ferro sillico manganese from Vietnam, Ukraine and India.

The Korea Trade Commission proposed temporary duties ranging from 6.08 percent to 32.21 percent, saying the three countries sold ferro sillico manganese, an alloy widely used in iron and steel industries, lower than normal market prices, hurting the South Korean industry.

S. Korean financial groups report earnings surprise in Q1 on higher NIM

South Korea’s top banking groups reported their highest quarterly earnings in the first quarter of this year, thanks to improved net interest margins (NIM) amid higher lending rates. The surge in net profits comes despite the government’s ongoing efforts to tighten loans in a bid to curb snowballing household debt and their heavy exposures to the country’s sluggish shipbuilding industry. Hana Financial Group Inc. said on Friday that its consolidated net profit for the January-March period jumped 12.4 percent from a year earlier to 492.1 billion won ($434 million).

SK Hynix develops new graphic memory GDDR6

South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix Inc. said on Sunday that it has developed the graphics double data rate 6 (GDDR6) memory chip designed for graphic processors. This is an upgrade of the GDDR5 boasting of faster data transferring speed than its predecessor. The world’s second-largest memory chipmaker claimed that its 20-nano level 8 gigabit (Gb) GDDR6 can transfer data at 16 Gb per second (Gbps) per pin, which is by far the fastest speed offered in the industry. By utilizing 384 input and output (I/O) modules that are most commonly adopted by high-quality graphic cards, the memory chip can send graphic data of up to 768 gigabytes (GB) per second.

Four core Lotte companies to demerge into holding, operating entities

South Korea’s fifth largest conglomerate Lotte Group has become the latest to join the reorganization wave sweeping across family-run Korean listed members by breaking up into holding/parent and operating entities or starbusting to simplify their traditional sprawled ownership structure based on multi-layered cross-sharing. According to sources from the investment banking industry on Friday, the group’s four affiliates Lotte Shopping Co., Lotte Confectionery Co., Lotte Chilsung Beverage Co. and Lotte Food Co. will hold separate board meetings next week to vote on plans to break up their business structure into holding and operating companies. Eventually, the four holding entities will come under Hotel Lotte to make it sole parent entity. The scheme would make the subsidiaries wholly owned by the parent entity.

S. Korea faces IPO rush by Southeast Asian companies

South Korean stock markets have become a popular financing destination for Southeast Asian countries. According to securities industry sources on Thursday, Laos’s largest natural rubber supplier Asia Rubber Technology Holdings early this month appointed KTB Investment & Securities Co. as its underwriter to lead its initial public offering (IPO) process in Seoul with an aim to join the country’s stock exchange next year.
